“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.” – Sun Tzu, The Art of War
A hundred years ago, the problems that plague modern society would have seemed as far-fetched as magic. Even in the early 20th century, it would have been difficult to imagine a culture more heavily focused on sensory satisfaction than the one in which we find ourselves today. With the near-constant bombardment of advertising, music, and even politics, simply walking down the street can cause a crisis of conscience.
Technology has infiltrated nearly every part of modern existence, from eBooks to fitness trackers–almost all under the guise of convenience. Technology makes our lives easier. Unfortunately, this unprecedented technological growth has facilitated an unprecedented number of ways for anyone and everyone to spread whatever message they’d like for you to hear. In our lives, media is omnipresent, and aside from moving to a cabin in the mountains, its negative influence is all but impossible to avoid completely.
This constant barrage has provided Satan with a unique opportunity. He has overseen the growth of the media since the beginning, and it is now a platform by which the Adversary can communicate with us directly.
Of course, not many of us would say that we are willingly subjecting ourselves to any evil influence. The problem, then, lies in the fact that we do not realize it is happening. That’s why it is of the utmost importance that we familiarize ourselves with the Devil’s tactics–not to glorify them, but so that we know how best to resist their deception. When it comes to Satanic influence, ignorance is never bliss.
The Great Controversy is very real. It is a war waged not only for our hearts, but for our minds. Through the mind, the heart becomes swayed. As you read through this blog, you may begin to wonder if anything is safe anymore. Fortunately for us, safety doesn’t come from our circumstances, but from fully trusting in the protective power of God. Use these articles as a tool, along with earnest prayer, to build your spiritual discernment, especially when it comes to entertainment. In order to win the daily battle, do as Paul said, and “put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil” (Eph. 6:11).
